How to word it well

  1. Include the date, the names and the rough location. That is genuinely all a save the date needs.
  2. Say an invitation is coming. Otherwise guests wonder whether this was the invitation.
  3. Do not ask for an RSVP. A save the date is a heads-up, not a request for a commitment.
  4. Only send them to people you will definitely invite. You cannot take a save the date back.
  5. Send them six to twelve months ahead. Sooner for destination weddings, where guests need to book leave.

Send it — and pair it with a gift

A free invitation ecard is ideal for a save the date, since the formal invitation comes later. See also wedding invitation wording and what to write in an invitation:

FAQ

What do you write on a save the date?

Names, the date, the rough location, and a line saying the invitation will follow. Nothing else is needed.

When should save the dates go out?

Six to twelve months before a wedding, and further ahead for a destination wedding where guests need flights and leave.

Do you need an RSVP on a save the date?

No. It is a heads-up rather than a request, and asking for a reply this early creates confusion.

Who should get one?

Only people you are certain to invite. A save the date is effectively a commitment you cannot withdraw.

What is a good short line?

“Save the date! Anna and James, 6th September 2027. Invitation to follow.”

Can a save the date be digital?

Yes, and it usually is now. The formal invitation is where couples still tend to spend on print.
