When results were not what they hoped

  1. Results are one day. They are not a verdict on you.
  2. Not what you wanted, I know. There are more routes than anyone tells you at eighteen.
  3. I am proud of the work you put in, whatever the paper says.
  4. Plenty of people got the wrong result on the wrong day and went on to be fine. You will be too.
  5. This changes the route, not the destination. Ring me when you want to talk it through.
  6. Exams measure exams. They do not measure you.
  7. Whatever happens now, we will sort it out together.
  8. Disappointed for you, not in you. Big difference.

Short messages

  1. Congratulations!
  2. Well done — brilliant results.
  3. So proud of you.
  4. Fantastic news!
  5. You did it!
  6. Delighted for you.
  7. Superb. Well done.
  8. Onwards!

How to write it

  1. Praise the effort, not just the grade. It travels better whatever the results turn out to be.
  2. Find out before you send. A jubilant card on a bad results day is worse than no card.
  3. If it went badly, separate them from the outcome. “Disappointed for you, not in you” is the line that helps.
  4. Do not compare. Siblings, friends, and your own results at that age are all unhelpful.

Send it — and pair it with a gift

FAQ

What do you write for exam results?

Congratulate the effort as well as the grade. That way the message holds up whether the results were what they hoped for or not.

What do you say if the results were bad?

Separate the person from the outcome and point at the alternatives. “Disappointed for you, not in you” is the most useful sentence available.

Should you ask what they got?

Let them tell you. Asking directly puts people with disappointing results in an awkward position.

What do you write for a degree result?

Treat it as the serious multi-year achievement it is, and acknowledge how much of it was unseen work.

What is a good short message?

“Congratulations! All that work paid off.”

When should I send it?

On results day itself, once you know how it went. Sending blind risks getting the tone badly wrong.
