Messages are crafted from templates. We never generate hateful, harassing, deceptive, explicit, or impersonation content.

From a colleague

  1. Welcome! I sit two desks over — come and say hello whenever.
  2. Welcome to the team! Coffee this week? I will fill you in on everything the induction skipped.
  3. Great to have you. Ask me the questions you do not want to ask your manager.
  4. Welcome! I joined six months ago, so I remember exactly how this feels.
  5. Welcome aboard! Lunch on Thursday? A few of us go out.
  6. So glad you are here. Shout if you need anything at all.
  7. Welcome! The coffee machine is temperamental. That is your first lesson.

For a card signed by the whole team

  2. We are all really pleased you have joined. Welcome!
  3. Welcome aboard from everyone here.
  4. The whole team is glad to have you. Welcome!
  5. Welcome! We have all been looking forward to meeting you.
  6. From all of us — welcome, and good luck with week one.

Short welcome messages

  1. Welcome to the team!
  2. Great to have you.
  3. Welcome aboard!
  4. So glad you are here.
  5. Welcome — shout if you need anything.
  6. Delighted you have joined us.
  7. Welcome! Good luck this week.
  8. Happy first day!

How to write it

  1. Remove the pressure explicitly. “Nobody expects you to know anything yet” is the single most reassuring line for a new starter.
  2. Offer something concrete. A coffee, a lunch, or an open door beats a generic welcome.
  3. Say who you are and where you sit. New starters cannot match names to faces for weeks.
  4. Keep it short in a group card. Twenty people writing paragraphs is unreadable; twenty short warm lines is lovely.

FAQ

What do you write in a welcome to the team card?

Say you are glad they joined, remove any pressure about their first weeks, and offer something specific like a coffee or an open door.

What should a manager say to a new starter?

That there are no expectations beyond settling in, and that questions are welcome — including ones they feel they should already know the answer to.

When should you send it?

Either just before their start date or on the first morning. A welcome message in week three has missed its moment.

What do you write in a group card?

One or two warm lines and your name and role. In a card signed by twenty people, brevity is a kindness.

What is a good short message?

“Welcome to the team! Great to have you with us.”

Is a Slack message enough?

It is fine on its own, but a card the whole team has signed is the thing new starters remember and keep.
