Why short works
- The reader is exhausted. A short card can be taken in at a glance, which is often all anyone can manage.
- Short avoids the traps. Most of the phrases that hurt — “at least”, “everything happens for a reason” — appear when people write on past the point of knowing what to say.
- Say the name. Even in three lines, using the person’s name matters more than any other detail.
- Ask nothing. No questions, no “let me know” — a card should not create a task.

FAQ
Is a short sympathy message enough?
Yes. Bereaved people consistently report that brief, sincere notes are easier to receive than long ones. Presence matters more than length.
What is the shortest acceptable message?
“I am so sorry. Thinking of you.” Three or four words of genuine sympathy is never inadequate.
What should a short message avoid?
Anything starting “at least”, anything requiring a reply, and any instruction about how to grieve.
Can I text instead of sending a card?
Yes, particularly early on. Add “no need to reply” so it does not become another obligation.
How do I sign off?
“With deepest sympathy” for formal situations, “with love” for people you are close to. Both are fine.
When should I write again?
A few weeks later, and again at a few months. That is when the cards have stopped and the grief has not.
